– Traditional Narrative Singing & Contemporary Dance
– a collaboration between Kong Chan and Wayson Poon

CREATIVE CONCEPT – the power of one body, one voice

Traditional Chinese theatre is described as an art form that tells stories through dance and songs (以歌舞演故事). It can also be understood conversely as an art form that stages stories in order to perform song and dance (以故事演歌舞). This duality explains why narrative is sometimes perceived as secondary within traditional Chinese theatre.

Based on the Chinese classic novel, The Golden Lotus, “Lotus in Gold” is an ongoing artistic inquiry into how this essence of traditional theatre can be adapted and amplified through the collaboration between contemporary dance and traditional music. This work questions the assumed dichotomy of tradition and contemporaneity.

Featuring a solo dancer who embodies both male and female characters, this work also reflects on constructions of masculinity and femininity.
